Festival Program and Panel Schedule now Available!

With the festival only a few days away we’re happy to be able to release the official program, and announce the schedule of panels! You can download the official program here (complete with all the games, panels, badge quest details, map and all the other fun things), or pick up a print copy on the day. We are also excited to announce that Auslan Interpreters will be present at all Panels during the event; for more details on this, plus more information on accessibility for the event head to the official announcement here.



The panels were extremely popular in 2014, so this year we’ve built on that success with an expanded line up, and panels covering a range of topics.

Panelists at the 2014 FestivalAll panels will be held in the Supper Room, which is adjacent to the main festival hall. Attendees are asked to be seated 5-10 minutes before the advertised start time to help ensure all panels run to schedule. Panelists will speak for approximately 40-45 minutes, with 10-15 minutes of Q&A time.

Can’t make it to the festival? Not to worry, our panels will all be recorded this year! They’ll be available via the website in the following weeks, so stay tuned for more details.



For many of us, gaming has been a lifelong passion, and our childhoods are filled with fond memories of couch battles with our families and friends. Kids love games just as much as adults, but it can be difficult to navigate the different platforms, genres and age ratings (among other things) when looking for games to be played by, or with children. Our panelists will discuss what to look for when choosing games for kids, and the role of parents in game play. We’ll also hear from developers about making games for kids, and getting them involved in making games too!

– Lecturer in Game Design & Culture at ECU, PhD candidate, award winning game developer and father of four.
Mike Browner – 10 years experience in retail games management, avid gamer and former President of Wai-Con.
Anthony Sweet – Lead Designer on Star Hammer: The Vanguard Prophecy, the man behind Handwritten Games, former General Manager of Let’s Make Games, and parent.
Karen Wellington – Project and Program Manager at the Fogarty Foundation, coordinator of CoderDojo WA.

The Page is a casual, monthly meet up for interactive writers, game designers, screenwriters, narrative mechanics and aspiring writers. This month The Page will be sharing their discussion at the Perth Games Festival, so come join the conversation and talk all things games and writing with us!

Brad Power – Lecturer in Game Art and Design at Murdoch University, game developer at his independent studio Rockethands.
Anthony Sweet – Lead Designer on Star Hammer: The Vanguard Prophecy, the man behind Handwritten Games, former General Manager of Let’s Make Games and parent.
Ben White – A regular of The Page with a keen interest in game narrative, currently studying Game Design through OUA.
Leah Hayward-Crichton – Geologist and attendee of The Page who loves writing and game narrative.



More people are playing and making games than ever before, and as the community has grown so too has the call for games that represent a wide range of human experience. This panel explores the importance of diversity in games, with discussion of ways developers can make more representative games, of how both players and game makers can be supportive of diverse voices, and will include examples of games featuring positive identity representations. Our panelists will speak from a wide range of perspectives, including disability, the LGBTIQ spectrum, and culturally diverse backgrounds.


Sophie Ambrose
– Former Mathematician and Science Communicator, game developer at Spiral Atlas Games with an interest in game accessibility and representation of diverse character identities and relationships.
Alexandra Helens – Studying a Bachelor of Computer Science at ECU, member of CASSA (Computer and Security Student Association), keen gamer and supporter of women in games.
Christian Kurt Mendoza – Events admin for Perth Gaymers group, Pictionary champ and Dungeon Master who hopes to see more diversity and inclusiveness in games and gaming communities.
Hien Pham – Currently studying Animation at ECU, aspiring game developer with an interest in culturally diverse LGBTIQ characters in games and comics.



A conversation between Amani Naseem and Dr. Kate Raynes-­Goldie

The future of digital games is now. As augmented reality, mixed reality and virtual reality devices launch as consumer products over the next few years, video games are no longer going to be just on the screen-they will be unleashed into the real world, turning our everyday world into a gaming platform. While this may sound like the future, pervasive, experimental and physical world game designers have been working in this space for years. Join two of these designers, Amani Naseem and Dr. Kate Raynes­-Goldie for a conversation about their work and what they think some of these new augmented and mixed reality games will look like.


Amani Naseem
– Artist and researcher based in Copenhagen and Melbourne, member of the Copenhagen Game Collective, PhD candidate at RMIT.
Dr Kate Raynes-Goldie – Director of the Games & Interactive Program at FTI, founder of Games We Play, Adjunct Research Fellow at Curtin University and award winning game designer.



It has never been easier to get started making games, but with a world full of resources, where do you begin? Our panelists will share their experiences of getting into game development, along with advice for aspiring developers, plus some tips and tricks they have picked up along the way. Whether you have played games your entire life or are just getting started, there’s no reason to stop you from making them too!

– Making games since age 7, he has worked on social web and mobile games, including Mr Nibbles Forever.
Wesley Lamont – Owner and Lead Designer for RAEZ, game developer, the man behind COGZ, and its ludicrous counterpart!
Vivien Lengkeek – Archaeologist and Heritage Consultant, Mentor and Learning & Development Manger with CoderDojo WA, Panels Coordinator for the Perth Games Festival, game player and maker.
Lisa Rye – Lead Artist and Game Designer at Stirfire Studios.
