Festival Program and Panel Schedule now Available!

With the festival only a few days away we’re happy to be able to release the official program, and announce the schedule of panels! You can download the official program here (complete with all the games, panels, badge quest details, map and all the other fun things), or pick up a print copy on the day. We are also excited to announce that Auslan Interpreters will be present at all Panels during the event; for more details on this, plus more information on accessibility for the event head to the official announcement here.

 

THE PANELS

The panels were extremely popular in 2014, so this year we’ve built on that success with an expanded line up, and panels covering a range of topics.

Panelists at the 2014 FestivalAll panels will be held in the Supper Room, which is adjacent to the main festival hall. Attendees are asked to be seated 5-10 minutes before the advertised start time to help ensure all panels run to schedule. Panelists will speak for approximately 40-45 minutes, with 10-15 minutes of Q&A time.

Can’t make it to the festival? Not to worry, our panels will all be recorded this year! They’ll be available via the website in the following weeks, so stay tuned for more details.

 

10:30AM – KIDS & GAMING

For many of us, gaming has been a lifelong passion, and our childhoods are filled with fond memories of couch battles with our families and friends. Kids love games just as much as adults, but it can be difficult to navigate the different platforms, genres and age ratings (among other things) when looking for games to be played by, or with children. Our panelists will discuss what to look for when choosing games for kids, and the role of parents in game play. We’ll also hear from developers about making games for kids, and getting them involved in making games too!

– Lecturer in Game Design & Culture at ECU, PhD candidate, award winning game developer and father of four.
Mike Browner – 10 years experience in retail games management, avid gamer and former President of Wai-Con.

The Page is a casual, monthly meet up for interactive writers, game designers, screenwriters, narrative mechanics and aspiring writers. This month The Page will be sharing their discussion at the Perth Games Festival, so come join the conversation and talk all things games and writing with us!

Brad Power – Lecturer in Game Art and Design at Murdoch University, game developer at his independent studio Rockethands.
Anthony Sweet – Lead Designer on Star Hammer: The Vanguard Prophecy, the man behind Handwritten Games, former General Manager of Let’s Make Games and parent.
Ben White – A regular of The Page with a keen interest in game narrative, currently studying Game Design through OUA.

1:15PM – GAMES & DIVERSITY

More people are playing and making games than ever before, and as the community has grown so too has the call for games that represent a wide range of human experience. This panel explores the importance of diversity in games, with discussion of ways developers can make more representative games, of how both players and game makers can be supportive of diverse voices, and will include examples of games featuring positive identity representations. Our panelists will speak from a wide range of perspectives, including disability, the LGBTIQ spectrum, and culturally diverse backgrounds.

Sophie Ambrose
– Former Mathematician and Science Communicator, game developer at Spiral Atlas Games with an interest in game accessibility and representation of diverse character identities and relationships.
Alexandra Helens – Studying a Bachelor of Computer Science at ECU, member of CASSA (Computer and Security Student Association), keen gamer and supporter of women in games.
Christian Kurt Mendoza – Events admin for Perth Gaymers group, Pictionary champ and Dungeon Master who hopes to see more diversity and inclusiveness in games and gaming communities.
Hien Pham – Currently studying Animation at ECU, aspiring game developer with an interest in culturally diverse LGBTIQ characters in games and comics.

A conversation between Amani Naseem and Dr. Kate Raynes-­Goldie

The future of digital games is now. As augmented reality, mixed reality and virtual reality devices launch as consumer products over the next few years, video games are no longer going to be just on the screen-they will be unleashed into the real world, turning our everyday world into a gaming platform. While this may sound like the future, pervasive, experimental and physical world game designers have been working in this space for years. Join two of these designers, Amani Naseem and Dr. Kate Raynes­-Goldie for a conversation about their work and what they think some of these new augmented and mixed reality games will look like.

It has never been easier to get started making games, but with a world full of resources, where do you begin? Our panelists will share their experiences of getting into game development, along with advice for aspiring developers, plus some tips and tricks they have picked up along the way. Whether you have played games your entire life or are just getting started, there’s no reason to stop you from making them too!

The Achievement Badge Quest has returned in 2015, giving you the opportunity to win prizes just by playing games! Around the Perth Town Hall, a number of developers have exclusive festival badges for you to collect – here’s what you need to know to get your badges and win some awesome things.

How does it work?

The Badge Quest is free to take part in; here’s what you need to do to get involved:

  • When you arrive at the Festival, head to the Welcome Desk to get your 1st badge;
  • Play games at the badge booths, and complete the assigned task to earn your badge;
  • Collect all 12 badges (kids collect 8, with no doubles);
  • Show you badges to the Information Desk on the 1st Floor, and collect your reward!

What can you win?

Realmz Escape GameWe have a huge range of prizes available for you to pick from, including lots of games, tickets, and books for both adults and kids on making games, coding and art.

First up, thanks to the folks behind the Realmz Escape Game you could get your hands on double passes to the live-action game Curse of the Mummy (valued at $70!). Surprise! It’s the Perth Arcade!

We here at the Perth Games Festival know that gaming is portable, you can play anywhere, and you don’t even need a mobile phone or 3DS. However playing arcade games out and about is a tad harder so we got to thinking, Backyard.SK puts arcade games in awesome places, what if there were spaces where people could walk in, and play some of the best games Perth has to offer?

With this in mind the Perth Arcade was born. With help from our friends at Backyard.SK and the game developers from the Central Institute of Technology, arcade machines have been deployed all around town! From now until Friday the 27th of November you can hit up the State Library of Western Australia, Carpe Coffee, The Moon or The Flying Scotsman and play a range of games on arcade cabinets. And the best part is most of them require you and a friend! Gaming’s always better with friends!

So if you want to have some fun before the festival, or just want to check out something different, head along to one (or all!) of the arcade sites and enjoy! You can also share your photos with us, just use #perthgamesfest and we’ll see them!

CoderDojo WA Digital Project Awards

We’re pleased to announce that CoderDojo will be joining the Perth Games Festival for a second year! A variety of projects from Ninjas (kids aged aged 7-17) across WA will be showcased during the festival, which will be followed by the Digital Project Awards in the evening. The awards recognise the achievements of the Ninjas, and are an opportunity for the community to celebrate another successful Dojo-year!

All festival attendees are encouraged to visit the CoderDojo booth, speak with the learning mentors, and of course take a look at some of the games, websites and other awesome projects the Ninjas have worked on. Hopefully many of the Ninjas will be exhibiting at the Festival in years to come!

 

What is CoderDojo?

CoderDojo is a global, free, open source movement of volunteer run coding clubs for children (Ninjas) aged 7-17. Since its inception in 2011 the movement has spread to nearly 60 countries, with over 700 Dojos verified. CoderDojo WA was established as an initiative of the Fogarty Foundation in 2013. Since then 20 Dojos have been verified-that’s the most in Australia!

FTI Presents Amani Naseem, and the Future of Gaming

A two player game where one player is mounted with 2-5 Move Controllers and the other player with 2 magnets, one blue, one yellow. When the game is on, a random Move Controller will light up in either blue or yellow showing which magnet to connect that controller to. The players must then keep that controller and magnet connected while dancing to the beat. The more you dance (move to the beat), the higher the score. This however, also makes it more difficult! Players fight to stomp each others jelly fish (PS Move controllers) and protect their own. When the Playstation Move controllers are plopped under water the bluetooth connection breaks. Three times under water kills a jelly fish.

Hello Everyone,

The Perth Games Festival team has been hard at work getting everything prepared for the festival at the end of this month.  Awesome events have been planned, FTI has organised some incredible looking pervasive games to play and we have over 30 incredible developers showcasing their games on the 28th.

So this is where we need your help, we need wonderful people willing to spend their time making sure the developers have their booths setup, the panelists are prepped and ready and that every attendee will have a great time.  Ben has returned as the Volunteer Coordinator to make sure that you, the individual volunteer is well looked after, fed, rested and has every opportunity to also enjoy the day.

The Games of Festival Past: Part 3

With the Perth Games Festival now less than a month away it’s time to saddle up, ready our lances, and charge ahead with Part 3 of our Games of Festival Past series!

Since featuring at the festival last year Valiant – the mounted medieval combat game for the Oculus Rift – has thundered across the local development scene, leaving a cloud of praise in its wake. After being Greenlit in January the developers, Offpeak Games, received a placement in the Amcom Upstart program, and more recently were awarded a grant from the new OOMPF! Games fund!

Valiant has been a popular download on Oculus Share, and the team will be launching their Kickstarter for the final game very soon! So keep an eye out, because OffPeak Games will be back again for the 2015 Festival, and you will once again be able to get your hands on the ultimate medieval madness VR experience.

A source of constant temptation to the volunteers staffing the welcome desk at last year’s festival, this squaretastic multiplayer arena shooter proved immensely popular with PGF attendees. The game was launched on Desura in October 2014, then cornered the market on Greenlit and released on Steam earlier this year.

Square Heroes has been highly successful since release, having received a nomination for Best Game at the 27th West Australian Screen Awards. It is currently available right now on Steam for PC, Mac & Linux, and they will be bringing their 4-player mayhem back for this year’s festival. Woo!

Imagine the love child of Seinfeld and The Secret of Monkey Island, raised on a diet of sunshine and salt from our very own locale of Fremantle, Western Australia. Imagine that and it may get you some way to understanding this comedic adventure game, renamed One Night Only since last year’s PGF.

After festival goers were introduced to the life of stand up comedian Nelson Jones, local developer Oscar Brittain has continued work on his project, with release expected in the near future. One Night Only was also recently featured at Playup Perth, a regular playtesting event for local game developers, and the developers are continuing to work on more unique gaming projects.

Ever wondered what sharks, heavy metal and a handful of dice have in common? Yeah, neither did we, but that all changed when we heard about The Awesome System by Shark Punch Studios! This Role Playing Game system let players experience a “reckless game of boundless, terrifying power”, which we imagine must feel something like strapping on an Evil Dead-esque chainsaw hand, pushing back a pair of mirrorshades, and hacking our way Stallone-style through a horde of flesh eating zombies. Or sharks. Heck, why not both!?

After its initial release in 2013 The Awesome System has undergone a few updates, with a revised edition out in January this year. Both physical and digital copies are available from Sharkpunch Studio’s website, so you can grab it now if you’re keen for an intense RPG adventure.

Announcing The B Side – Extended Play: A Playful Unconference

The Perth Games Festival was created as a way of showcasing the best games Perth has to offer to the community at large, for several years we came together to hold a showcase, usually at e-central Tafe, and afterwards we would vanish only to be seen again at the christmas party.

Last year however, after we had cleaned up the Perth Town Hall, many of the developers decended on a local bar and sat around discussing the day we had, each others games and other interesting topics. This was a nice change of pace compared with the very busy day.

The festival is a lot of work for the game developers of Perth and doesn’t give much opportunity to discuss, debate and enjoy work, theory and implementation of games and play with each other. However after last year’s Festival a very smart person thought “wouldn’t it be good if we could continue the discussion some more?”. To that aim Louie and Sophie from Backyard.SK proposed an additional event, but this being SK no ordinary event would fit, it had to be something small, simple and social that would encourage participation.

Extended Play PosterSo I’m happy to tell you all about Extended Play: A Playful Unconference that will run on Sunday Afternoon following the festival at Backyard.SK. The concept is simple, we all show up at the venue and then anyone in attendance can propose a 10 minute talk or short workshop on anything they choose. From there we have a couple of locations so we can run two or so streams of content and then we start talking. If you’re not interested in what’s being presented just walk into the other room and check that out or just start a discussion with others. It’s simple, straight forward and Louie plans to be burning meat and veg on a BBQ in the evening.

Anyone can attend Extended Play as it’s the breadth of experience that makes an unconference special.  And you have to admit, it’s a pretty Perth way to talk about games and play ^_^

  • When: Sunday the 29th of November. Doors open from 1200, talks start from 1300. Night is over from 2200.
  • Who: People who are interested in game development, play or just hangin’ out / talking on topics.
  • How Much: Entry is free, BBQ by donation.
